States plan for vaccines

As several states drafted plans this week for COVID-19 vaccines, governors and state officials were weighing concerns about the order in which shots will be dispensed. While each of them faces decisions specific to their states, Healthcare providers, teachers, and first responders should be at the top of the list.

That seems to be the case, which is a good thing. Healthcare workers are overburdened across the country, and many schools are facing a shortage of available teachers. The sooner vaccinations are given out, the sooner we can look forward to some sense of normalcy.

Martin County

Kudos to Martin County Commissioners, who chose to forego a 2.5 percent increase in their 2021 wages. Commissioner Richard Koons rightly pointed out that if they ask for other county departments to trim their budgets, the commissioners can do the same.

Good leadership means more than providing direction. It means getting in the trenches with employees and volunteering to face the same situations they do.

Marina Lodge variance

The Fairmont Board of Zoning Appeals granted a variance request this week, allowing the Marina Lodge leeway to add a second floor. Owner Scott Unke envisions a second floor directly above the existing ground floor structure, with a small deck.

The Marina Lodge is a favorite hangout for many, and the addition will be a good one. It’s nice to see local businesses expand on any level.

COVID-19 cases rising

COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Martin and Faribault Counties. It’s time for everybody to mask up. This is not the time to be a rebel. If we want to see cases come down, we all need to do our part. Let’s consider our family, friends, and neighbors. Let’s all do what is right, regardless of personal opinions. We’re all in this together.
