Surprise! Mueller probe digs and finds … sex

Special counsel Robert Mueller was assigned the job of looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign “colluded” with Russian contacts to, presumably, gain an edge in that election.

Like every special counsel, it seems, Mueller has gone off in a million different directions. While tasked with one thing, he does have the authority and responsibility to investigate other crimes that may emerge in the course of his work.

What this has meant is that he has found crimes unrelated to Russia, in the form of financial fraud, lying to the FBI and other things. The most recent news is that President Trump’s former “fixer,” Michael Cohen, has been sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to paying “hush money” to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. These are two women who allege they had affairs with Donald Trump.

Ah, yes, as in the case of Bill Clinton, it always comes back to sex.

Trump could supposedly be in trouble for orchestrating the hush money payments, because, for some odd reason, they may represent a violation of campaign finance laws. Go figure.

Trump and his attorney, Rudy Giuliani, deny the president ordered Cohen to make said payments. They accuse Cohen of lying. But let us go out on a limb and suggest that Trump knew these women were being paid off. The question is should that matter?

As in the case of Clinton, it’s all seedy. Unbecoming for a president, or one to-be. Not great for American parents to have to explain or for children to hear about.

But who should decide the seriousness of the matter? Can it even be taken seriously? As things stand today, we’d say leave it up to voters in 2020 to debate Trump’s fate. In the alternative, Democrats will have to explain why Trump should be impeached over sex, but it was wrong to do the same to Clinton.
