Clintons get clearance despite obvious conflicts

Imagine yourself as a State Department ethics office employee, asked for opinions on the propriety of activities that earn your boss’ family millions of dollars. How often are you going to rule against her?

Very rarely, an investigation by the Associated Press discloses. The AP looked into more than 300 rulings by the State Department ethics office on requests for appearances by Bill Clinton at various events while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.

At least 330 requests were cleared, even in situations involving conflicts. One approval was for Bill Clinton to address clients of a British bank under investigation for violating international economic sanctions against Iran, Cuba and other countries.?

Another clearance allowed Bill Clinton to attend five events held by a Swiss bank that previously had been involved in tax evasion.

In all, the ethics office cleared activities that allowed Bill Clinton to rake in nearly $50 million.

While secretary of state, Hillary Clinton used the ethics office review process, despite its obvious flaws, as cover against conflict of interest accusations – knowing full well a review independent of the State Department would have raised red flags.

Now she wants to go back to the White House, where the possibilities for conflicts of interest are even greater.
