Preparing Fairmont for opportunity in uncertain times

To the Editor:

In acknowledgment of the unrest occurring in parts of Minnesota, I am writing not to discuss politics, but opportunity. In larger cities and surrounding areas, businesses are closing and people are unable to go to work. That kind of disruption is not sustainable, and it will have long-term consequences for those communities. They may begin looking elsewhere for stability and opportunity.

When I moved to Fairmont three years ago, I had a very difficult time finding housing. I searched extensively and was told by multiple apartment buildings that their wait lists were extremely long. I was fortunate to eventually find a place, but that experience highlighted an important issue: even during relatively stable times, demand already exists here.

More recently, my boyfriend, who works at 3M, was informed that he will be losing his job in the coming months. As we weigh our options, I was reminded of the flyers we have received over the years encouraging residents to consider moving to South Dakota, emphasizing the opportunities available there. That messaging has clearly been intentional and effective.

I believe many people may soon be looking for new opportunities and new places to rebuild stability. My question is whether Fairmont can prepare for that future and position itself ahead of the curve. As a small city on the state border, Fairmont may be uniquely positioned to experience growth if it plans proactively.

Can we put our differences aside and work together to think not only about how to make Fairmont a better place to live today, but how to prepare for the opportunities that may come tomorrow? With thoughtful planning around housing, employment and infrastructure, Fairmont could become a place people choose; not just now, but for the long term. As conversations continue, I encourage all of us to be guided by good faith, mutual respect and a shared commitment to the well-being of our neighbors. Thank you for taking the time to read my words.
