Kids against hunger Pack

To the Editor:

I just went to an amazing event. Singing, dancing, comedy, instruments, even painting. It was incredible and done entirely by high school students. What was this event? The Kids Against Hunger Variety Show. The students who participated were raising awareness about hunger in out local community and the world. They collected a free will offering to help raise money for the Kids Against Hunger Pack.

Kids Against Hunger gathers groups from local businesses, civic organizations and churches to pack tens of thousands of meals each year. These meals feed not only people in the world’s poorest countries, but also people in our community who are food insecure. This is truly an organization that acts both globally and locally.

Last year was the first year I joined the packing crew. My 3rd grade child and one of his friends wanted to be part of this amazing mission. We arrived, watched a short video about where the food would go and learned how to quickly pack and seal meals so they could be shipped efficiently. We even got to taste the food we were packing. Then, we started packing. When a large group of dedicated volunteers get to work, it’s fun and productive. We met high school students and teachers, business people and great volunteers from the area and had a lot of fun.

To do all of this, Kids Against Hunger needs your help. On Feb. 18, they want to pack 100,000 meals. They need to raise $30,000 to do that. If you’re wondering how you can help, there are many ways. First, you can donate to pay for the meals (Treasurer: Sue Homan, 921 Hengen Street, Fairmont, MN 56031). Second, join a team to pack the meals (Contact: kahfairmontmn@gmail.com). You can find out more at http://kahfairmontmn.weebly.com/. And finally, watch your calendar next year for the Kids Against Hunger Variety Show. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

Thank you,

Jennifer Hamlet
