‘Strong’ community Center concept presented

To the Editor:

Thank You Citizens 4 a Strong Fairmont. Your presented concept for a Martin County Community Center, by rejuvenating the SMEC Building, was well thought-out and effectively presented at the Fairmont City Council meeting. All your efforts, research, ingenuity, listening, surveying and inclusion of citizens came through very positively and productively.

Fortunately, there are many opportunities for athleticism throughout all of Martin County. (Fitness clubs, basketball courts, school facilities, bike trails, golf courses, tennis courts, ball parks, play parks, a triple disc golf course, many lakes (for summer and winter sports), hockey arena, skateboard park, aquatic center and more.

The Community Center concept put forth by Citizens 4 a Strong Fairmont offers:

• A great central location, within walking distance of the well-used Martin County public library. (Think of that)

• Gathering spaces for a wide variety of activities that people of all ages can enjoy, such as: creative hands-on hobbies, games of all sorts, billiards, music, bands, dances, dance classes, pickle ball and others.

• A friendlier membership price for all citizens.

• Cost-effectiveness to the citizens of Martin County; both in development and maintenance in the coming years.

Let’s get on board with this viable solution, instead of competing with existing businesses; spending tens of millions of dollars (while buildings currently sit empty) and wasting resources we already have at hand. The partnership with CER is a splendid idea too.

The difference between feasibility and viability is that feasibility means how easy or difficult something is and whether you can achieve it or not. Viability means the ability to work successfully and make sure the business works great in the long run. It is the ability to survive.
