Manage your own household

To the Editor:

I was able to sit in and listen to Fairmont City Council question the city administrator’s ability to train, welcome, communicate and manage the city staff. The biggest issue they mentioned was communication. If our own city staff can’t communicate within the walls of city hall, no wonder they can’t communicate with us landlords when trying to replace an ordinance that will affect our businesses and “households” for years to come.

City council also brought up the ongoing issues with the inspections department in city hall. This has been a topic of discussion for all my years in Fairmont, and nothing seems to change. Yet, city council thinks we as landlords need to be micro-managed by this dysfunctional power hungry inspections department and that we can’t be trusted or aren’t capable of selecting our own state licensed general contractors or certified home inspectors to inspect our rental units. City council stated all the reasons we don’t trust nor want city hall or the inspection department to be in charge of the inspection process of our properties.

I sure hope city council sees that their concerns on Monday night, Oct. 11, with city hall’s lack of communication, enforcement, and the inspection department are the same concerns we landlords have in giving more power to government in the replacing of the current rental ordinance. Lets enforce the city codes and current ordinance as they are written and demand city hall is held accountable for their lack of communication, education, training, and enforcement.

Why doesn’t city hall worry about getting their “household” in order before they start trying to micr-manage our small businesses?
