Virtual ‘Relay’ Aug. 1

To the Editor:

Because of the coronavirus, it will not be possible to have a traditional Relay for Life this year. Sadly, that means our event that was scheduled for June 27 will not take place. We will have a bigger and better Relay in 2021.

We are still selling luminarias, taking donations and sponsorship donations. Money donated will be handled the same way it always is. The donations will help thousands of people with breakthrough research, crucial patient care programs, and education and prevention initiatives. This year has been a hard time for everyone, including the American Cancer Society.

Survivors: Please know we have not forgotten about you. We know how hard you fight and have fought in your cancer journey. We honor you and celebrate you and those we have lost every day, whether we can be together or not. You are what Relay is all about. The survivor committee is hoping to have an event for survivors sometime in September. We have to make sure it is done safely as our survivors’ safety comes first.

If you know a survivor/survivors, please call them or send them a card and tell them you’re thinking of them. I’m sure they will be happy to hear from you and know that we are remembering them even though we cannot have a traditional Relay this year.

There will be a virtual Relay on Aug. 1 that will be put on by all Minnesota relays, and mostly put together by the American Cancer Society leadership team called Stronger Together MN. You can find out more on Facebook by following the “Relay for Life of Martin County” page and the “American Cancer Society MN” page.
