Humbled by support
To the Editor:
I am incredibly humbled to write this letter to the editor. During a time of shelter-at-home, social distancing and face-mask wearing, the Fairmont Soccer Association had the inconceivable happen: the largest flower sale in our history by volume of plants sold, gross revenues and proceeds to our association.
Recently I learned that there appears to be a shift from baking to gardening as a shelter-at-home activity. We are thankful to the community for considering us again for some of your gardening needs. Your support goes directly to the funding of youth soccer, equipment, soccer coaching education and, yes, paying for referees. Your support lessens the financial burden for our players and their families.
On behalf of the Fairmont Soccer Association, I wish to gratefully thank our leadership team, our volunteers, our player helpers, Martin County Sheriff’s Department, Martin County Fair Board, Fairmont Fleet & Farm Supply/Ace Hardware and especially those people who bought flowers from us.
There was every reason to lack optimism that this event would occur and to lose sight of the joy of gardening. But our customers, our supporters, came through for youth soccer beyond our wildest hopes (in the protection of their cars). And to them we give a round of applause and a heartfelt thank you.
