Garden tour a success

To the Editor:

The members of MOSS (Many Offerings of Special Support) would like to thank the garden owners from this year’s garden tour and all the garden lovers who attended the tour. Once again, the gardens were inspiring and a delight.

This year’s funds purchased equipment for three young children in our area: Ireland Meyer received a three-wheel bike to help with her motor skills. Many of you saw Ireland on her new bike at the Knights of Columbus Hall, as we were able to present it to her on the day of the tour. Shylynn Palagi of Fairmont received outdoor play equipment and stain for the family handicap ramp. Silas Borntrager of Fairmont also received a bicycle. This is what the garden tour is all about. All funds raised from the tour stay right here in your community, helping local children with special needs, many of whom you may know.

MOSS has hosted the garden tour for the past 10 years. Since our inception in 1989, MOSS has raised and given over $50,000 back to this community. It gives us such pleasure to see the eyes light up on a child when presenting them with something they need so badly and the family may struggle to provide.

For you, the pleasure is three-fold: Your $15 ticket allows you a wonderful day touring beautiful gardens, feasting at a fabulous salad luncheon, all knowing your donation will help to purchase something for a needy child.

However, it is with regret that MOSS has decided to make the tour a biennial event. The garden tour will now be held on the fourth Saturday in June on the “odd” years only. Plans are being made for other garden-related activities such as workshops, speakers, or seminars on the “even” years. Your suggestions are welcome.

The popular salad lunch will be held annually in conjunction with each event. While there are many beautiful undiscovered gardens out there, garden owners are apprehensive about being on the tour. The garden tour is not a competition; it is sharing your passion of gardening with others while raising money for a great cause. If you know of anyone willing to share their gardens with us, please call Linda at (507) 235-3820 or email linda_303@yahoo.com

We would also like to invite new members to join us 5:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Green Mill Restaurant in Fairmont.
