Jerry Laverne Mapson was born on April 26, 1943, to Laverne and Marjorie (Tyson) Mapson in Winnebago, Minn. He graduated from Huntley High School in 1961, where he enjoyed playing football.

On Sept. 1, 1974, Jerry was united in marriage to JoAnn Klug in New York Mills, Minn. This marriage was blessed with two children, Jennifer and Brian. They made their home on the family farm outside of Granada. Jerry and JoAnn later divorced.

Jerry spent much of his life working hard and taking pride in whatever job he had. He farmed on the family farm, continuing the agricultural tradition that was an important part of his life. Over the years, Jerry also worked at Stokley Van Kamp's as a pea binder and at Wel-Cam Breeders near Granada. He later worked as a farmhand for a special family, Bill and Pat Cowing, who treated him as a son to them, where he became a valued and dependable part of their lives. Jerry was a hardworking man who never shied away from a job and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Jerry loved farming and bowling, and in his younger years, he enjoyed playing ball. One of his greatest joys was visiting with people. Jerry could strike up a conversation with just about anyone and never met a stranger. He had a gift for making people feel welcome and could turn an ordinary encounter into a meaningful visit. Most of all, Jerry loved all of his family so much and was so proud of his grandchildren.

Jerry also loved going for rides, enjoying the opportunity to get out and see what was going on. He faithfully filled out his Publishers Clearing House entries, always hopeful that his name might be the lucky one called. Jerry also had a generous heart and faithfully donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children, causes that were important to him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Jennifer Hughes and her fiancé, Randy Nelson of Sherburn, Minn. and Brian Mapson of Fairmont, Minn.; grandchildren, Derek Hughes of Fairmont, Minn., Logan Hughes of Sherburn, Minn. and Taylor Hughes of Sherburn, Minn.; sister, Carol Ann Pierce of Fairmont, Minn. and Randy Mapson and his wife, Julie of Baxter, Minn.; mother of his children, JoAnn Mapson of Windom, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Laverne and Marjorie "Marge" Mapson; brother-in-law, Steve Pierce; aunt, Leathal Mapson; nephew, Dustin Mapson; and many other family members and loved ones.
