FAIRMONT -- A time for celebrating and remembering the life of Richard "Dick" S. Carter, 67, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held at a later date. A private burial will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont, Minn. Dick passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in Fairmont, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Richard "Dick" Scott Carter was born on June 4, 1959, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of William and Bonnie (Butcher) Carter. He grew up in Fairmont where he attended school and graduated from Fairmont High School with the Class of 1978. Following his graduation, Dick attended technical college in Pipestone, Minn., where he studied Food Produce Management.
Dick made his home in Fairmont and throughout his career, held a variety of jobs and took pride in every one of them. He enjoyed his years at AGCO in Jackson, Minn., and Tyco Plastics in Fairmont, but his greatest fulfillment came while serving as a custodian for the Fairmont School District. More than keeping the halls clean, Dick treasured the daily interactions with students, always ready with a joke and a conversation.
Dick was known for speaking his mind never pretending to be anyone other than himself. He valued his independence and possessed a wonderful sense of humor that made those around him smile. He loved exploring the country on road trips, especially those shared with his father, creating memories that remained close to his heart throughout his life. At home, Dick found peace on his daily walks around Fairmont’s beautiful Chain of Lakes, taking in the scenery and enjoying the outdoors.
Sports were one of Dick’s greatest passions. He was a devoted and lifelong Raiders fan, standing by his team through every season. In later years, he embraced the excitement and unpredictability of college football, spending crisp autumn Saturdays cheering for the Clemson Tigers.
Dick had an incredible memory for history. He could recall dates, events, and fascinating historical facts with remarkable accuracy, making conversations with him both entertaining and educational. Music was another constant in his life. Classic rock, especially Ozzy Osbourne was always playing whenever he had the chance.
Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Deb (Bill) Fritz and Doug (Sarah) Carter; nieces and nephews, Nick Fritz, Kristin (Kyle) Fritz-Grammond, Joe Carter, and Ann Carter; two great nephews, Liam Fritz and Braven Grammond; two great nieces, Jayden Grammond and Laken Grammond; special cousin, Don Heideman; as well as many other extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bonnie Carter as well as other extended family and friends.
