Norwood Allen Stromberg was born on Nov. 19, 1935, in East Chain Township. He was the son of Oscar and Alma (Soma) Stromberg. Woody was baptized and confirmed at East Chain Lutheran Church. He attended East Chain School and graduated from East Chain High School in 1953. After graduating, Woody worked at Holley’s Farmers Supply before entering military service.
On Sept. 4, 1958, Woody enlisted in the Army where he served with Company B, 94th Engineer Battalion as a Heavy Vehicle Driver. He served in Germany before earning his honorable discharge on Aug. 16, 1960.
On April 5, 1964, Woody was united in marriage to Janice Luhmann at the East Chain Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children, Deb, Patti and Bob. At a young age, Woody moved to the Soma family farm where he lived and farmed the land until he and Janice moved to Fairmont in 2012. Woody and Janice shared over fifty-nine years together before Janice passed away on Oct. 2, 2023.
Woody enjoyed going to his kid’s and grandkid’s events. You could usually catch him watching an event with him “checking out the inside of his eyelids”; aka taking a nap.
Woody was a life-long member of East Chain Lutheran Church where he was active on the church council. He was also a 4-H leader and a member of the Martin County Farm Services Co-op Board and the Lee C. Prentice American Legion.
