Maynard Richard Johnson was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Jackson, Minn., the son of Carl and Adella (Roggow) Johnson. Maynard’s story began on the Johnson family farm in Petersburg Township, rural Jackson, Minn.

He attended Petersburg Country School before continuing his education at Jackson High School, graduating with the Class of 1953. In his youth, Maynard participated in sports, 4-H, and FFA, developing not only his skills but also a lifelong appreciation for teamwork and planting the seed for a successful teaching and coaching career later in life.

Maynard went on to attend Mankato State Teachers College in Mankato, Minn., where he majored in mathematics and competed as a member of the track and field team. After earning his teaching degree in 1957, he began what would become a remarkable career in education, first teaching in Byron, Minn.

On May 8, 1958, Maynard married the love of his life, Audrey Ann Moyzis, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minn. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, partnership, and family. They made their home in Byron before moving to Trimont in 1961 and eventually settled in Fairmont in 1965.

At Fairmont High School, Maynard taught mathematics and computer science until his retirement in 1992. Beyond the classroom, Maynard dedicated himself to coaching track and field and cross country, encouraging young athletes to strive for excellence both on and off the field. His contributions were later honored with his induction into the Fairmont High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Though he loved teaching and coaching, Maynard’s heart never strayed far from his roots and where he grew up. The family farm remained his greatest passion, a place where generations gathered and where he quietly instilled in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the values that had shaped him. Through his example, he passed down not just a livelihood, but a legacy, one rooted in care for the land, commitment to family, and pride in a hard day’s work.

Faith was the cornerstone for Maynards life. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, where he gave generously of his time and talents in a variety of roles.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Audrey A. Johnson of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Terry (Diane) Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Bryan Johnson of Alburquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Peter (Megan) Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Tommy (Erin) Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Hannah Alexis of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Estelle Alexis of Bozeman, Mont.; great-grandchildren, Micah Johnson, Joah Johnson, Adeline Johnson and Charlotte Johnson; as well as many other extended family and friends.

Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Adella Johnson; daughter, Lynette Joy Johnson; daughter-in-law, Tara Fletcher; and brother, Roger C. Johnson.

The family requests memorials be made in Maynards’ name to the Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
