Larry A. Puhrman was born on Jan. 19, 1946, to Walter and Edna (Joens) Puhrman in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Larry grew up in the Sioux Valley community, where he was confirmed at Sioux Valley Lutheran Church and graduated from Sioux Valley High School in 1964.

After college, he found his calling in the classroom, beginning his teaching career at Trimont High School before making his home in Welcome and dedicating 34 years to Welcome High School and Martin County West. To his students, he was more than a teacher. To his athletes, he was more than a coach. He took three teams to the state tournament three years running in the mid-1970s and was named Coach of the Year in 1981.

Larry was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome. Around town, he was easy to spot, organizing cribbage tournaments with friends, volunteering with the Welcome Fire Department, or cheering on whatever sport was in season. He had a soft spot for animals, especially his cat, and supported the Martin County Humane Society. He loved the outdoors, staying active, and never seemed to run out of reasons to be outside.

Larry will be long remembered for his kindness, his easy friendliness, and the way he made everyone feel like they mattered.

Larry is survived by his brother Merle (Luella) Puhrman; nephew and nieces, Stephen Puhrman, Suzanne (John) Mehlhoff, Jolene (David) Zeman, Tricia Martin, and Jessica (Michael) Mann; step-nephew and step-nieces, Gary Johnson, Patricia (Floyd) Bolton and Debra (Steve) Johnson; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and many great friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Cletius Puhrmann, sister-in-law Patricia Puhrman; and niece, Judy Blount.
