Stanley Harold Nelson was born on Aug. 17, 1939, to Harold and Elsie (Anderson) Nelson in rural Fairmont. Stan grew up on farms in Elm Creek Township. He attended country school and later obtained his GED while he was serving in the Army from 1963-1965. He spent 18 months stationed in Germany at the beginning of the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he worked road construction.
Stan enjoyed roller skating where he met the love of his life, Sandi Erickson. They were married on Feb. 24, 1968, after which they began their farming life. Stan farmed for 40 years and retired – but not really. The big vegetable gardens were always his pride, which meant he was basically still farming up until his final harvest.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Sandi; children, Michael Nelson, Brent (Amy) Nelson, Elsa (Jay) Larkin, and Chad (Nina) Nelson. For a while, they hosted exchange students and four of them have remained very close, Cris Overgaard and his wife and two children, Toby Sonesson and his wife and two children, Kai Rune Saether and his husband, and Rasmus Jakobson and his wife; two brothers, Duane Nelson and Melvin (Kathy) Nelson; sisters-in-law, Lois Kraft and Nancy Nelson; and many cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Those who have gone on before are his parents, Harold and Elsie; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Russ and Vivian Erickson; brothers, Donovan Nelson and Lester Nelson; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
