Cherie M. Madden

ARMSTRONG, Iowa — Private family services for Cherie M. Madden, 87, of Armstrong, Iowa, will be held at a later date. Cherie passed away Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong, Iowa, with family at her side. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Cherie Mae (Kingston) Madden was born on Nov. 14, 1938, in Armstrong, Iowa, to John and Jennie (Slaba) Kingston. The youngest of three daughters, Cherie had two sisters, Judy and Karen.

Cherie attended school in Armstrong public school where she was active in band, chorus, and basketball.

Cherie was united in marriage to Joe W. Madden in 1956. The couple lived in Estherville while Joe attended Estherville Junior College and then moved to Ames where Joe attended Iowa State University. The couple then returned home to farm in Seneca Township, Kossuth County, Iowa.

Cherie kept busy with raising the family, gardening, canning, and helping Joe with raising hogs and milk cows for five years. She was active in the Methodist Church, Women’s Group, was a member of the church choir and also helped teach Sunday School and Bible School for many years. Cherie and her dear friend, Joy Lindell were members of the building committee that was instrumental in the design and layout of the Methodist Church Reception Hall and Kitchen that was added to the church in the early 1980’s.

In 1985, Cherie and Joe moved to Bozeman, Mont., for several years with their two youngest children, Christopher and Jennifer. They made many friends there and spent time on motorcycle trips, snowmobiling, downhill skiing, and hiking. While in Bozeman, the couple won a trip to Europe in 1986. They were active in the Bozeman church activities and 4-H.

In the fall of 1987, Cherie and Joe returned to Iowa and in 1994, began building their home on Iowa Lake, north of Armstrong. Cherie enjoyed hosting card parties and picnics at their new home and the couple collected Western, Cowboy, and Native American artwork.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Elizabeth Madden of Altoona, Iowa, Steve (Melissa) Madden of Armstrong, Iowa, Christopher (Kirsten) Madden, Carnation, Wash., and Jennifer Madden, Belgrade, Mont.; daughter-in-law, Darcy Madden of Emmetsburg, Iowa; six grandchildren, Adam Madden, Brittany Bauer, Darci Steifel, Mallorie McClaskey, Cecelia Madden, and Abigail Madden: six great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Bjorkman of Oswego, N.Y.; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Cherie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jennie Kingston; husband, Joseph Madden in 1998; daughter, Sheila Madden in 1983; son, Joseph Madden Jr in 2022; sister, Karen; as well as many other extended family.
