Richard Lloyd Hample passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026 at the Good Samaritan Society in Jackson. Richard was a beloved local businessman and active member of the Jackson community his entire life and is already missed by his family and many friends.
Richard was born Aug. 21,1935 to Lloyd and Mary Hample and graduated from Jackson High School in 1953. He married the love of his life, Darlene Reineke of Lakefield, Minn., Aug. 29, 1956. Their 56-year marriage was blessed with three children, Kenny, Kim and Karen.
Along with Richard’s father Lloyd, Richard and Darlene ran the successful Hample’s appliance stores in Jackson, Slayton and Pipestone for many years, winning multiple sales awards from leading brands like Carrier, Maytag and Whirlpool. Over the years, his family heard countless stories of how they helped struggling residents of SW Minnesota get needed appliances.
Richard was passionate about many things, especially flying, skydiving, scuba diving, hunting, fishing, and later, prairie conservation. But his calling was helping others in the community.
Besides serving in the National Guard, he was a dedicated member of the Jackson Airport Commission for more than 30 years, helping to modernize air travel in SW Minnesota.
A private pilot for more than 50 years, Richard was awarded the Federal Aviation Master Pilot award in 2012, “In recognition of your contributions to building and maintaining the safest aviation system in the world through practicing and promoting safe aircraft flight operations.”
Richard was a member of Our Redeemer Church in Jackson for more than 70 years. He was also an active member of the Jackson County Ambulance Service for decades, helping hundreds at their time of greatest need, before retiring in 1995, and a valued member of the Jackson County volunteer fire department for decades, serving as chief from 1982-1985.
He was past president of the Spirit Lake Shore Acres Association and Spirit Lake Protective Association, as well as a member of the American Legion, rarely missing Friday nights “with the guys.”
Richard loved spending time chasing walleyes and perch at his cabin on Lake Winnibigoshish and his dock on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake. He spent years reclaiming more than 50 acres of native prairie at his farm near his home to provide habitat for pheasants, deer, rabbits and other wildlife.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, wife Darlene, son Kenneth, daughter Kim, son-in-law Wayne Nesmoe, sister Lorna (Dr. Jean) Bader.
Left to treasure his memory are daughter Karen (Steve) Pennaz of Ennis, Mont.; daughter-in-law Angela Hample of Spencer, Iowa; grandchildren Colt Hample of Dickson, Tenn., Brent Hample of Carroll, Iowa, Adam (Holly) Hample of Lakefield, Catarina Hample of Spencer, Iowa, Madeline Richards of Ennis, Mont., Pierce Pennaz of Burnsville; great grandchildren, Darin, Zander, Evelyn, Dottie, Calvin, Zadkiel, Olivia, and Chase; sister-in-law, Irene Anderson; nieces Sharon (Don) Jacobsen, Deb Lewis (Kyle) and numerous cousins, most notably Jerry Mellum who provided loving care, appreciated adventures and tasty kolaches during Richard’s final months.
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
Blessed be the memory of Richard Lloyd Hample.
