Greta W. Haler
FAIRMONT — A Funeral Service for Greta W. Haler, 91, of Fairmont, Minn., and formerly of Elmore, Minn., will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, at the East Chain Evangelical Free Church in East Chain, Minn. Burial will be held following the service in the East Chain Evangelical Free Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, at the church. Greta passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 4, 2026, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Memorials are preferred to Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Greta Wilhelmina (Smidt) Haler was born on Jan. 18, 1934, to Enko and Clara (DeWall) Smidt at home in Mountain Lake, Minn. She received her education from Titonka Public Schools.
On June 6, 1960, Greta was united in marriage to Waler Haler at Ramsey Reformed Church in Titonka, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with six children, Maurice, Clare Ann, Judith, Edwin, Melvin and Gregory. Greta and Walter made their home on a farm near the Iowa/Minnesota border by East Chain, Minn. before moving to Elmore, Minn. in 1990. Greta and Walter farmed for many years, and Greta worked hard around the home and raising her children. She could often be found in the kitchen peeling potatoes. She also enjoyed being outside mowing the lawn. Greta loved doing puzzles and most of all spending time with her family and friends.
Those left to cherish her memory include her five children, Clare (Tom) Schisler of Woodbury, Minn., Judith (Dale) Anderson of Ventura, Iowa, Edwin Haler of Winnebago, Minn., Mel (Tonya) Haler of Lone Rock, Iowa and Gregory (Becky) Haler or Woodlawn, Tenn.; grandchildren, Melissa Schisler, Mariah (Matt) Melde, Ambre (Carl) Anderson, Jessica (J.D. “Judd”) Schroeder, John (Megan) Anderson, Logan Anderson, Chelsea (Trent) Maakstead, Luke Haler, Lily Haler, Bryce (Eden) Haler, Jared Haler, Starr (Josh) Oswald, Brandon Haler, and Brittania (John) Hern; great-grandchildren, Lucy and Oliver Melde, Aiden Waugh, Kailynn, Nolan and Jacob Anderson, Destyn and Dayton Maakstead, Cheyanne and Ayden Schroeder, Axel Haler and Jamari Haler, Remi, Tyson and Tatum Oswald, Hayden Hern, Sophira Hern, Cassandra Haler, Marissa Devereaux and Aliana Hern; sister, JoAnn McCloskey of Chaska, Minn.; sister-in-law, Ruth Haler of St. James, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Enko and Clara Smidt; husband, Walter Haler; and son, Maurice Haler.
