Born on Oct. 23, 1970, Bill was the firstborn child of Robert and Esther Grogin, who raised a loving family in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They instilled in their children the values of good citizenship, curiosity, loyalty to the Yankees, and, above all, putting family first. Bill was born with a spirit of determination and service that shaped every stage of his life. That spirit was first evident in the way he lived as a big brother to Dan and Becky–loving, guiding, protecting, and inspiring them as their hero, role model, and best friend.

The same instincts to protect and uplift others defined his lifelong pursuit of justice and purpose. A proud veteran, he served honorably from 1993 to 1996 in the United States Army with the 187th Infantry Rakkasans and the elite 101st Airborne Division–the Screaming Eagles. His time in uniform forged a deep sense of discipline and duty that guided him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Bill earned his law degree with aspirations of becoming a prosecutor. Fate, however, led him down a different path–one that became his true calling. As a public defender, he found his voice and his mission: to stand beside those who had no one else, to fight for fairness, and to ensure that every person had an advocate, regardless of circumstances. He showed humor and humanity even in the most challenging parts of his work.

Outside the courtroom, Bill found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved relaxing with a perfectly grilled steak and a glass of red wine. An avid reader and lover of history, he enjoyed deep conversations, always eager for thoughtful, spirited debate.

Above all, Bill cherished his family. He shared a deep and abiding love with his wife, Darci, who was his partner, confidante, and greatest supporter. Together, they raised Kate and Samuel, who brought him endless pride and joy. Bill delighted in their accomplishments, celebrated their quirks, and cherished every moment spent together–whether at home, on family adventures, or simply enjoying a quiet evening around the dinner table. His devotion to them was constant, and his guidance, humor, and love shaped their lives in countless ways.
