Jaguars struggle to contain Edgerton in home opener
TRUMAN – Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman fell to Edgerton 54-0 during Saturday afternoon’s home opener in a Nine-Man South District, West Subdistrict football game.
The Flying Dutchmen rattled off four consecutive scoring drives in the first half to take a 38-point lead at the break. Edgerton tacked on two more scores in the second half to finish off their second win of the season.
GHEC/T utility man Bowan Sill accumulated 134 rushing and receiving yards on 25 touches. Jaguars quarterback Reagan Emmert went 13 for 28 with 148 yards passing and two interceptions.
Edgerton’s Michael Gunnink tallied 95 yards on the ground, 89 from the air, and four total touchdowns.
“I think a lot of it was that they [Edgerton] started tightening up towards the red zone, and we unfortunately weren’t able to match or exceed their intensity,” GHEC/T head coach Alex Roorda said about his offense.
The Jaguar defense set the tone early in the first quarter after the opening kickoff. Edgerton quarterback Colin Scholten missed an out route on the sideline on a third and five, forcing a three and out for the Flying Dutchmen offensive attack.
However, GHEC/T couldn’t take advantage of the early defensive stop.
A completion between Emmert and Sill got the offense to third and short on a ten yard connection, but an incompletion and false start stalled the drive, ultimately forcing the unit to punt.
A high snap on GHEC/T’s first special teams play of the game immediately gave Edgerton a scoring chance. Gunnink took advantage of the flip in field position, stacking together two carries that punched the Flying Dutchmen on the scoreboard.
Edgerton remained aggressive on their next possession following a Jaguar three and out, this time scoring from the air with a connection from Scholten to Tucker Arp for another touchdown.
Gunnink tacked onto the lead after receiving a pass from Scholten on a go route, passing all Jaguar defenders, and bringing home the 68 yard scoring play. The Edgerton lead swelled to 24-0 after completing their third straight 2 point conversion.
The next two drives for GHEC/T showed promise.
Sill started things off with a pair of chain-moving runs to put the Jaguars immediately at midfield. The sophomore collected another 20 yards on a big reception and run over the next two plays, putting his offense right in scoring position.
But following a holding and two negative plays in the backfield, the Jaguar offensive unit ran out of steam after Emmert’s fourth down pass hit the ground.
The Jaguars had another solid drive end prematurely on their next possession after seeing the Flying Dutchmen tack on another score from Arp.
GHEC/T marched right back to midfield, using a handful of Sills receptions and a couple of facemask calls.
But again, momentum couldn’t be carried by the Jaguar unit.
Two carries from Keagan Berhow were met at the line of scrimmage, causing another fourth down for Emmert and company.
The Edgerton defense racked up the pressure on the senior quarterback, forcing an incompletion and another drive without points.
“We were moving the ball on them, but just couldn’t execute in the end,” Roorda said. “Bowan ran hard, Reagan did well today, but unfortunately we just didn’t get in the endzone like we are supposed to.”
Edgerton tallied one more score with just over a minute left in the half. Set up by a big punt return from Gunnink, the Flying Dutchmen found themselves with another opportunity to punch in a touchdown.
On the first play of the possession, Edgerton head coach Andrew Fleischman rewarded his playmaker with another touch, this time off an outside sweep. Gunnink maneuvered through the black and purple defense, running for 20 yards, and finishing his scoring day.
Edgerton put up two more scores in each of the remaining quarters. This marks the second consecutive game Fleischman’s team has reached more than 50 points this season.
GHEC/T (1-1) takes on Wabasso on Friday for the team’s second road game of the season. Meanwhile, Edgerton (2-0) hosts Mountain Lake Area this Friday for the Flying Dutchmen’s 2025 home opener.
“At the end of the day, it’s a game, we will flush it and are lucky it’s not the end of our season,” Roorda said. “Next week we are going to take it to Wabasso, so can’t wait for that.”
