Jean A. Maakestad

FAIRMONT — Services for Jean Alice Maakestad, 89, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Minn., with burial held in Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service from 12 to 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Jean passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Jean Alice (Nessa) Maakestad was born on March 2, 1936, to parents, Howard and Mabel (Olson) Nessa, in Forest City, Iowa. Jean and her twin sister were the first set of twins to be born in Forest City. She was baptized and later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School.

Following her graduation, Jean moved to the Twin Cities, where she worked as a secretary at the University of Minnesota.

In 1956, Jean was united in marriage to Duane A. Maakestad. The couple made their home in Iowa, where they were blessed with three children. In 1962, the family moved to Fairmont, Minn., where they welcomed home their fourth child.

Jean worked as a secretary at the Fairmont School System for many years. She was an active member at Grace Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, assisted with bible classes, was a member of ladies’ circles and helped serve many people and families as a member of the funeral committee. In her free time, Jean enjoyed summers spent at their cabin in Alexandria, Minn. and winters spent in Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Terry, Kelly (Mike), Kris and Jon (Jill); grandchildren, Jason, Maggie, Dominic, Derek, Sara, Alyssa, Megan, Jack, Mike, David; 15 great-grandchildren and her beloved four-legged friend Mimi; as well as many other extended family and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Duane Maakestad, daughter-in-law Jean Maakestad, her grandson Tyler Wenzel, mother and father, Mable and Howard Nessa, and two sisters, Irene and Jane.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her friend, Jayne.

The family requests memorials be left in Jean’s name to Grace Lutheran Church of Fairmont.
