Joan Lee (Wagner) Hartwig was born July 25, 1940, in Winnebago, Minn., the daughter of Gerald and Eleanor (Schaal-Chase) Wagner. Joan attended Fairmont public schools and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1958. During high school, Joan worked with her mother, who owned and operated the Feed Bag Drive Inn.

On May 31, 1959, Joan was united in marriage to Ronald Hartwig at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont. This union was blessed with three children: Paige, Blaine and Cade. After getting married, the couple moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where Ron was stationed with the U.S. Navy. The family later returned to Fairmont in 1964. Joan worked as an optician until her retirement on Dec.

31, 1996. Joan and Ron shared over sixty-five years together.

Many people knew Joan through her work at the eye doctor’s office. Some knew her through her volunteer work with the Welcome Wagon in Fairmont. Others knew her simply by ending up in the same place as Joan as she was known to walk up and talk to just about anyone and everyone. Joan and Ron loved to travel and visited many states throughout the years, when they were camping or

taking a ride on the motorcycle. She was also known for telling many good stories; mainly about her “adventures” with her wonderful children, but also for her “Ol’ Paint” joke. Joan was a long-time, active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont where she was a past church council member as well as a past member of the Fairmont Fire Department Auxiliary. During their free time, Joan and Ron spent a lot of time camping all over the states when

the kids were younger. Along with her many travelling adventures, Joan loved painting. Her family still has many of her paintings adorning their homes. Joan and Ron enjoyed spending winters in Arizona for many years. Joan most loved the time she was able to spend with her family.
