FAIRMONT — Marcia Ann (Hanson) Cherland of Fairmont, Minn., passed away Thursday, May 2,

2024, at United Hospital District in Blue Earth, Minn., surrounded by her family. Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Fairmont.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 10, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Blakjer Cemetery near Fenton, Iowa. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Marcia was born Aug. 6, 1946, in Estherville, Iowa, the daughter of Laurence S. and Eldora V. Hanson. She attended school in Gruver, graduating in 1964 from Lincoln Central Community School. Marcia went on to attend Waldorf College and later Mankato State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1968.

It was teaching that led Marcia to Fairmont, Minn., where she met her husband, Ronald John Cherland. The Cherlands were married on Aug. 8, 1970, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Estherville, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two children, Kirsten and Eric.

Teaching wasn’t just a job for Marcia, it was a way of life. Marcia helped to shape young minds for 37 1/2 years, each student holding a special place in her heart. After her retirement in 2005, she was active in P.E.O, a philanthropic educational organization, and remained connected to her teaching colleagues.

Faith was also extremely important to Marcia. While a member at Grace Lutheran Church, she served in Shalom Circle, taught Sunday School, was Sunday School Superintendent, and participated in various committees. Later, as a member of Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church, Marcia joined the women’s group and enjoyed worship, especially singing.

Outside of church and her teaching career, you could find Marcia volunteering with organizations such as Meals-on-Wheels and Goldfinch, sitting down with a good book, or celebrating her Norwegian heritage as a member of Vestlandslag (a Norwegian heritage group). In her retirement, Marcia and Ron would make their way to Mission, Texas, where they enjoyed the warmth of the Texas winter and being “Winter Texans.”

Marcia’s family was at the center of everything she did. She loved her children and grandchildren and treasured time spent with them during holidays, special visits, and trips.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Ron Cherland of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Kirsten (Jeff) Segar of Chaska, Minn. and Eric (Michelle) Cherland of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Julia Segar, Emily Segar and Senja Cherland; siblings, Richard “Dick” (Karen) Hanson of Estherville, Iowa, Kenneth “Kenny” (Judy) Hanson of Estherville, Iowa and L. Steven “Steve” (Karen) Hanson of Estherville, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Paul) Baker, Judy (Steve) Rieff, Janet Wiltgen, Marilyn Simpson; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Laurence and Eldora Hanson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, E. Julian and Ella Mae Cherland; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Roger Holtey; and brother-in-law, Erv Wiltgen.
