Lester ‘Butch’ H. Lenz

FAIRMONT — A funeral service for Lester “Butch” H. Lenz, age 96, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 1 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2024, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont. Visitation will be prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the church.

Lester passed away Monday afternoon, March 25, 2024, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Lester “Butch” Harold Lenz was born June 24, 1927, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Charles and Alma (Gossweiler) Lenz. Lester worked on the farm and later worked as a carpenter and in construction.

On July 11, 1945, Lester was inducted into the U.S. Navy and served until Nov. 13, 1945, when he earned his honorable discharge in order to help his family on the farm. Lester again answered the call to serve his country when he enlisted in the Army on June 19, 1951. He served as a sheet metal worker and was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Japan) and achieved the rank of CPL (T) before earning his honorable discharge on June 9, 1953.

On Oct. 11, 1963, Lester was united in marriage to Elaine Swanson at the East Chain Lutheran Church. The couple resided in Fairmont and were blessed with two children, Charles and Jennifer. Lester and Elaine shared over sixty years together.

Lester was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church as well as the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. During his free time, he enjoyed woodworking and reading. Lester especially loved the time he was able to spend with his family.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Elaine; daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Jerry Cassidy; grandchildren, Charley, Jordan and Samantha; two sisters-in-law, Marian Holland and Wilma Swanson; brother-in-law, Edward (Lorna) Swanson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Charles and Alma Lenz, Lester was preceded in death by his son, Charles; brothers, Victor, Frank, Elmer, Donald, Steve and Warren; sisters, LaVerna Fuller, Alice Tenney, Elaine Garner, Carline Colby and Celia Valencia; brothers-in-law, Francis Swanson, Robert Swanson and Maurice Holland; and sisters-in-law, Mae Swanson, and Charleen Swanson.
