James A. Wohlhuter

WELCOME — A funeral service for James A. Wohlhuter, age 94, of Welcome, Minn., will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2024, at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Welcome. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 22, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Military honors will be provided by Welcome American Legion Post 553, Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222, and Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36. Interment will be in the Welcome City Cemetery.

James passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 19, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

James Arthur Wohlhuter was born March 18, 1930, in Fox Lake Township on the Wohlhuter Century Farm. He was the son of Arthur and Rosa (Hartwig) Wohlhuter. James was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his youth at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Welcome. He attended District 22 Country School in Fox Lake Township.

On April 20, 1951, James enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea as an infantryman. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze campaign stars, the UN Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. James achieved the rank of Corporal (T) before earning his honorable discharge on Jan. 19, 1953.

On June 2, 1961, James was united in marriage to MaryAnn Lueck at the United Methodist Church in Welcome. The couple resided on the Wohlhuter Century Farm where they were blessed with three children, JoAnn, Nancy and Jay. James farmed on the family farm until going to work for Railway Motors in Fairmont until his retirement in 1995. James and MaryAnn moved into Welcome in 1987. James later moved into Seasons Health Care Center in Trimont. James and MaryAnn shared over 62 years together.

James was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Welcome where he held many offices as well as being the Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He was also a life member of the Welcome American Legion Post 553 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. During his free time, James enjoyed playing cards and watching sports. He especially loved the time he was able to spend with his family.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, MaryAnn Wohlhuter of Welcome, Minn.; children, JoAnn Wohlhuter of Welcome, Nancy Wohlhuter of Buckeye, Ariz. and Jay (Tamra) Wohlhuter of Fairmont, Minn.; grandsons, Derek Wohlhuter and Adam Wohlhuter, both of Fairmont; adopted daughters, Sally Schwenker of Buckeye, Ariz. and Audrey Swanson of Welcome, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Lois Van Riper and Arlene Lueck; brothers-in-law, Roger (Helen) Lueck and Elmer Buhmann; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Arthur and Rosa Wohlhuter, James was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray Wohlhuter and his wife, Ardella, and Vern Wohlhuter and his wife, Phyllis (Rudig); sister, Arline Storbeck and her husband, Eugene; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack Lueck and his wife, Verna, Max Lueck, Ella Zehms and her husband, Bob, Robert Lueck, Marvin Van Riper, James Lueck, ArlaRae Lueck, Dennis Lueck, and Judy Buhmann; parents-in-law, Henry and Johanna Lueck; nieces, Connie Powers, Carol Marx and Bonnie Melrose; nephews, Philip Wohlhuter, Donald Storbeck and Martin Van Riper. www.lakeviewfuneralhome.net
