Shirley L. Larson
FAIRMONT — A memorial visitation for Shirley L. Larson, age 92, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, with a prayer service at 4 p.m.
Shirley passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at Goldfinch Estates in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements. The family requests that memorials be directed to UHD Hospice.
Shirley Lee was born May 12, 1931, at her family’s home in Ayrshire, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Belle (Spittal) Treat. Growing up she attended country school in Swea City, Iowa, and graduated from Swea City High School. Following her high school graduation she attended Hamline University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
On June 20, 1953, she was united in marriage to Marvin Larson at the First Baptist Church in Swea City. Shirley and Marvin were blessed with two children, James and Corrine. They lived on the Larson family farm in Lakeville, Minn. until 1954 when they moved to Shirley’s family farm near Swea City. In 1989 the couple moved to Fairmont and made their home.
Shirley took great pride in nursing and held many positions throughout her career, which included head nurse of the surgical floor in Farmington, Minn., Nursing Night Supervisor at the Buffalo Center Hospital in Buffalo Center, Iowa, she developed and was the director of Iowa Lakes Community College School of Nursing in Estherville, Iowa, Director of Nursing Services at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Director of Irenaeus Treatment Center in Estherville and the Director of Chain of Lakes Chemical Dependency Services in Fairmont. Shirley retired from full-time nursing in 1993 but continued to work part-time until 2006.
In her spare time Shirley enjoyed traveling, spending time outdoors, golfing and skiing, and socializing with family and friends. She could often be found working on Sudoku puzzles, reading the Star Tribune or watching Jeopardy.
Left to cherish her memory include her son, Jim (LuAnn) Larson of Big Lake, Minn.; grandchildren: Justin (Mary) Sommer of Fairmont, Minn., Brandon Sommer of Fairmont, Minn., Megan Larson of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Beau (Emma) Larson of St. Louis Park, Minn.; great-grandchildren: Katelynn Sommer, Hunter Sommer, Zurrie Larson, Zayda Larson, Sebastian Larson and Shahpur Fadaie-Nia; brother, Max (Gail) Treat of Oelwein, Iowa; other extended family and friends.
