James “Jim” M. Bittenbinder
FAIRMONT — A Mass of Christian Burial for James “Jim” M. Bittenbinder, age 72, of Fairmont, Minn. will be 11a.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Burial will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2023, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Jim passed away Monday, November 13, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
James “Jim” Michael Bittenbinder was born on August 30, 1951, to Frank and Joan (Koch) Bittenbinder in Wadena, Minn. He graduated from Wadena High School and then attended Wadena Vocational Technical School.
On June 6, 1981, Jim was united in marriage to Dianne M. Olsen in New Ulm, Minn. This marriage was blessed with two children, Ryan and Nicholas. Jim and Dianne made their home in Fairmont. Jim worked as a Central office technician from June 1971 to December 2016 for Central Telephone (Centel) and finished with Frontier Communications.
Jim was a member of CWA (Communication Workers of America). He collected coins and aquaria. He loved listening to classical music and his two favorites were Beethoven 5th Symphony and the Planets by Gustav Holst. Jim loved to be outside where he could garden – trees and flowers, study planets and stars, walking, running, and biking until his accident on September 20, 2018, causing his paralysis.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dianne Bittenbinder of Fairmont; sons, Ryan Bittenbinder and Nicholas Bittenbinder, both of Fairmont; brother, Mike Bittenbinder of Fla.; sisters, Sue (Art) Yamamoto of N.M., Kay (Barry) Porter of Va., and Teresa (John) Erickson of Colo.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rick (Julie) Olsen, Ron (Cheryl) Olsen, Denise (Tom) Zernechel, and Donita (Ronnie) Jahnke, all of Mankato; special cat, Jethro and also, Kitty; puppy, Gracie Mae; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Joan Bittenbinder; brothers, John Bittenbinder and Donald Bittenbinder; and father-in-law, Don Olsen.
