Reinold Herman Hagen was born on January 20, 1935, on a snowy farm day to Emil and Flora Hagen in Lake Belt Township. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minn. He attended District #65 country school and graduated from Sherburn High School. He spent several years working with uncles in the construction business before training in the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, CO, Fort Monmouth, N.J., and serving as a Corporal Missile instructor at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. After he was discharged, he joined his father on the farm in dairying. Reinold invested in a hay baler and teamed with his cousins in bailing hay for many years. He also added an Angus beef herd to utilize some lake bottom pastureland.
Reinold was active in Young Adult Citizens in Martin and Watonwan Counties. At their weekly bowling night, he met Barbara Biesmann, a teacher in St. James, Minn. They were married on July 2, 1967, and were blessed with Kathleen and David for a fun-filled family life. As they spent many hours together on the farm, Reinold instilled his strong work ethic and love for his Savior in his children. He was a wonderful grandpa who loved to play cribbage and gave lots of tractor rides on the farm when the grandkids were young. He enjoyed watching them in all their activities through the years and was always ready to play cards (500) with whichever family members were around.
Reinold served on the Lake Belt Town Board as Treasurer (thirty-four years); Dunnell Elevator co-co board, St. John Lutheran Church of Dunnell (president, treasurer, elder and trustee in turn), Truman Lutheran Retirement Home Association Board and Martin Luther High School Board. When it was time to add the all-purpose athletic building to MLHS, he and his brother, Bob were actively involved in laying the block foundation.
At age 48, his heart needed repair surgery to the aortic heart valve and aorta, and he became aware his body had the Marfan Syndrome gene. He had the same Bjork-Shiley valve for almost 40 years.
After retiring from dairy farming, he started golfing with friends. He and Barb traveled together to many states and national parks, Panama, Eastern Canada, Germany and neighboring Benelux, and Mediterranean sites of the Apostle Paul. They retired to The Meadows in Fairmont in 2014, where he served on the board as president for eight years. He loved meeting, visiting, and making connections with new people wherever he went.
Reinold is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Kathy and Leon Gebhardt, and David and Karna Hagen; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Trevor) Osten, Megan (Jay) Wolff, Evan (Faith) Hagen, Caleb Gebhardt, Cole Hagen (special friend, Meghan), Benjamin Gebhardt, Rebecca Gebhardt, 6 delightful great grandchildren (Isaac, Michael, Joshua, Rachel, Anna, and Ava) plus one yet to be born; sister, Jeanne Lohse; sister-in-law, Ethel Hagen; brother-in-law, John and Marty Biesmann; sister-in-law, Sharon Larimore, and many other dear nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Reinold was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Hagen; brother-in-law, Herb Lohse; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Lyle Stoterau; father and mother-in-law, Reverend Roman and Jeanette Biesmann.
The family wishes memorials to be directed to Martin Luther Junior-Senior High School in Northrop, Minn.
