Darlene Sparks

GRANADA — A celebration of life service for Darlene H. Sparks, age 86, of Granada, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023, at Lakeview Funeral Home in

Darlene passed away Friday morning, Oct. 27, 2023, at her home in rural Granada. Memorials are preferred to UHD Hospice. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Darlene Helen (Peters) Sparks was born Aug. 16, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Minn., the daughter of Chester and Helen (Blythe) Peters. Growing up, she attended school in Spring Lake, Minn. and graduated from Deer River High School in Deer River, Minn. On May 28, 1955, she was united in marriage to Michael Sparks. This union was blessed with six children: Rusty, Candy, Matt, Steve, Doug and Ben.

Darlene lived in Washington, D.C. from 1955-1957 where she worked as a bank teller at the Pentagon. Darlene then moved to Granada, Minn. where she and Michael made their home together. She worked as a business manager for Granada Telephone Company, at Sparks Skelgas and was the city clerk for Granada. In her spare time, Darlene enjoyed going fishing with her family, quilting with family and friends, baking, cooking, crafting, gardening, and playing games and completing puzzles. She was a member of Mom’s Club, Garden Club and helped with Cub Scouts for many years as well as 4-H. Darlene was also a school board member, a member of the Prairie Star Quilters and Saddle Club.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Rusty (Diane) Sparks, Candy (Gene) Becker, Matt (Nylene) Sparks, Steve (Janet) Sparks, Doug (Stephanie) Sparks and Ben (Beth) Sparks; grandchildren: Amber (Mike) Brandt, Robert (Julie) Sparks, Amy (Bill) Blado, Brad (Lindsey) Becker, Elizabeth Sparks, Tyson (Lacey) Cooley, Joseph (Leah) Sparks, Brittany (Cody) Flattery, Mitchel Sparks, Michelle (Rob) Tanhoff, Tim (Kelsi) Sparks, Laura Sparks, Matthew Sparks, Daniel Sparks, Brianna (Loften) Covington and Brooke (Wyatt) McCarty; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Sullivan; sister-in-law, Mary Sparks; many other extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, Chester and Helen Peters, Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Sparks; mother and father-in-law, Art and Peg Sparks; sister, Alice Valtinson; brother-in-law, Robert Sparks; and granddaughter, Frances Sparks.
