Joan M. Engquist
MINNETONKA — A memorial service for Joan M. Engquist, age 90, of Minnetonka, Minn., formerly of Fairmont, Minn., will take place 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center Chapel in Fairmont, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Private family inurnment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont. Joan passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 30, 2023, at her son’s home in Minnetonka, surrounded by her family. She had recently moved to The Glenn of Minnetonka to be near her children and grandchildren. Memorials are preferred to any of the organizations listed below, in which Joan was actively involved. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Joan Margaret Rod was born Oct. 9, 1932, the daughter of Ernest and Adeline (Blader) Rod in Sisseton, S.D. Growing up she attended school and graduated from High School in Waverly, Iowa. Following her high school graduation Joan attended Luther College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1954. Joan then worked as a teacher at Lincoln School in Fairmont until starting her family. On Nov. 26, 1955, Joan was united in marriage to Howard L. Engquist in Waverly, Iowa. She and Howard spent their entire married life in Fairmont, where they enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 56 years until Howard’s death in 2012. They were blessed with three sons, whom they loved and supported.
Joan was a long-time, active member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she was involved in Circle, Bible Class and numerous committees. Joan was also an avid volunteer for the community that she loved so much, sharing her time and talents wherever needed. She helped bring music and the arts to Fairmont through more than fifty years serving on the board of Fairmont Community Concert Association. Other organizations that she helped with and was a member of include the Fairmont Hospital Auxiliary, the Fairmont Opera House, the Red Rock Center, the American Cancer Society (Daffodil Days) and AAUW. Joan enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and 500. She cherished the friendships that she made in the many card clubs in which she participated. She also enjoyed knitting gifts for friends and family and supporting music and the arts in many and varied ways.
Left to cherish her memory include her children: Jayson (David Winkworth), Lee, and Dale (Sheri Fine); grandchildren, Andrew (Christa) Engquist, Katie (Joe) Henefield and Hannah Fine; great-grandchildren, Emerson and Adeline Henefield and Noelle and Elsie Engquist; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Jo Rod; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Adeline Rod, and Ernest and Irma Rod, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Engquist; daughter-in-law, Laurel (Grefe) Engquist; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Audrey (Engquist) Byers; and nephew, Bruce Byers.
