Herbert W. Russ

FAIRMONT — A reception to celebrate the life of Herbert W. Russ will be held 2 p.m. on Sept. 30, 2023, at the Red Rock Center in Fairmont. There will be a private family burial for both Herb and June that morning at Lakeside Cemetery where Herb will be honored with military honors provided by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Herb passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Herbert Wayne Russ was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Pleasant Mound Township, rural Truman, Minn., the son of Raymond and Mary Luella (Morgan) Russ. He received his education attending school in Garden City, Minn. and graduated from Garden City High School. Following his graduation, Herb served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe and received his honorable discharge on Oct. 29, 1945. On May 12, 1948, Herb was united in marriage to June Ann Edhlund in Fairmont, Minn. Together the couple made their home in Fairmont and were blessed with four children, Barbara, Beverly, Bonnie and Brian.

Herb worked for 3M and retired after many years of service, working his way up to Supervisor. Herb was passionate about helping others and took great pride in volunteering his time with Kinship and many other organizations. He was active in the Fairmont Band and Sports Boosters and was an honoree in the Fairmont High School Sports Hall of Fame. Herb was a member of the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222; established a scholarship fund with June and volunteered with Dollars for Scholars. Herb was a member of the Fairmont Exchange Club where he received the Fairmont Golden Deeds Award. Herb also was awarded the prestigious 3M Volunteer Award and was known as ‘Mr. Popcorn’ for his work with concessions for Fairmont sports.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Barbara (Neil Glazman), Beverly (Rodney) Haeckel, Bonnie Russ and Brian (Pam) Russ; eight grandchildren, Bliss (Foster) Peterson, Jason Baldwin, Sara Jane Baldwin, Jessica (Roderick) Annis, Justin (Lauren) Haeckel, Katherine (Bradley) Graham, Joseph Russ and Rachel Russ; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as many other extended family and friends. Sadly, Rodney Haeckel, Barbara Russ and Jason Baldwin have all passed since Herb’s passing in 2020.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mary Luella Russ; his wife, June Anne Edhlund Russ; two sisters; four brothers; many in-laws and other family.
