W. James ‘Jim’ Rock

FAIRMONT — A memorial service for W. James “Jim” Rock, age 93, of Fairmont, Minn., formerly of Swea City, Iowa, will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Military honors provided by the Swea City American Legion Post 14 will follow the service at the funeral home. Visitation will be held following the service until 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jim passed away Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be distributed amongst Jim’s favorite charities. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jim Rock was born Aug. 2, 1930, at the home of his parents, Ed and Edna Rock, outside of Eldridge, Iowa. He attended grade school in a one-room school with one other classmate. Jim attended high school in Davenport, Iowa, with 600 classmates. Jim played football and participated in track. Jim received a scholarship to play football at Iowa State University. It was at ISU on a blind date that he met Marilyn Phelps. In 1950, Jim enrolled in the U.S. Air Force. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was crew chief on KC97s during the Korean Conflict. In 2014, Jim participated in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. In 1952, Jim and Marilyn wed. Two years later, Jim received an early  honorable discharge from the Air Force to help his brother-in-law, Bill Phelps, with fall harvest north of Swea City, Iowa. This venture led to Jim becoming a successful beef cattle feeder and grain farmer for over 60 years. In 1973, Iowa Congressman Wiley Mayne appointed Jim to his District Farm Advisory Committee. In addition to this appointment,  Jim was active in the National Cattle Feeders Association, Kossuth County Livestock Producers and other committees.

Jim and Marilyn had five children. Despite the demands of building his cattle feeding and grain operation, Jim rarely missed sporting events his kids were involved in. Jim was active in the Boy Scouts with his sons, becoming an assistant Scout Master. Jim was an avid golfer, belonging to Interlaken Country Club for many years. Jim believed in helping others. He was generous with his monetary contributions to various local and national charities.

Jim is survived by his wife of greater than 70 years, Marilyn; his children, Larry (Terry), Doug (Carla), David (Peg), Susan and Kate; his grandchildren, Chris (Cassie), Sarah (Scott), Cameron and Erik; his great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Aliana and Nash. Jim was preceded in his death by his parents, and older brother.
