Donald D. Schlager

WELCOME — A celebration of life visitation for Donald “Don” D. Schlager, 85, of Welcome, Minn., will be from 3-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at Kramer Funeral Home Chapel in Welcome. A graveside service will follow the visitation at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, at Welcome City Cemetery with military honors provided by Welcome American Legion Post 553.Donald passed away Saturday morning, Aug. 26, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn. Memorials are preferred to Welcome Fire Relief or the Welcome Historical Society. Arrangements are under the care of Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont,Sherburn and Welcome. Donald Duane Schlager was born April 18, 1938, to John and Irma (Wolff) Schlager in Jackson, Minn. He graduated from Jackson High School. After graduating high school, Don served in the National Guard for several years. On Nov. 3, 1957, Don was united in

marriage to Marilyn Poynter at the Union State Line Church in Petersburg, Minn. They made their home in Jackson until 1964 and moved to Welcome in June of 1964. Don worked as a lineman and foreman for Federated Rural Electric in Jackson and Welcome for 37 1/2 years.

Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome. He was also a member of Welcome American Legion Post 553, Welcome Fire Department where he served for several years as the fire chief and the Welcome Lions Club where he volunteered at many community events. Don enjoyed fishing, country music, especially Willie Nelson, and the MN Vikings. Don and Marilyn enjoyed traveling to places such as Mazatlan, Calif. and trips with the family to the Rocky Mountains and Disneyworld. Don will be remembered for telling many jokes to family and friends and for always being up for a party. He loved visiting and having drinks with friends. In his younger years, Don was a Peewee Baseball coach and Boy Scout leader.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Marilyn Schlager of Welcome; sons, Steven (Eugene Espinosa) Schlager of Truman and Mark Schlager of Welcome; son-in-law, John Speckman of Welcome; grandchildren, Brian Schlager and Anna Schlager; great-granddaughter, Blakely Schlager; sisters, Clarine Michelson of Jackson and Alice Anderson of Jackson; brother-in-law, Duane (Toni) Poynter of Sawyer, N.D.; nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Irma Schlager; daughter, Julie Speckman; grandson, Andrew Speckman; parents-in-law, Basil and Ethel Poynter; and brothers-in-law, Eddie Anderson, Tillman Michelson and David Poynter.
