Ted Sauers was born March 11, 1948, in Sherburn, Minn., to Theodore and Gladys (Blomquist) Sauers, Sr. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn. Ted graduated from Sherburn High School in 1966 and was united in marriage to Betty Danielson on June 10, 1967. Ted attended Mankato State University and graduated in 1970 with a degree in Elementary Education, later receiving his master’s degree in 1976. Ted taught 5th grade for 34 years at Washington school. New Ulm Schools awarded Ted the NUEA Teacher of the Year Award in 1985. During the summers, Ted spent time shingling, fishing and playing softball (many years ago). Ted gave back to the community in numerous ways; he held various jobs at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, coached and/or refereed baseball, basketball, volleyball and football for many years. After retirement, Ted served on the ISD 88 Foundation for 10 years and spent summers with Betty fishing on the many lakes up north. Highview Campground holds many fond memories for Ted and Betty; they had an annual contest of who could catch the biggest fish, usually with Betty winning. Ted loved taking Ben and Jack to the lake to fish and taking Ava tubing behind the boat. Ted’s children and grandchildren were extremely important to him and he loved watching all of them grow up. Ted was loved and held in high regard by so many family, friends and previous students.
Ted is survived by his wife, Betty; two children, Travis (Melissa) Sauers of Shakopee and Traci (Brian) Scott of Oakdale; three grandchildren, Ben and Jack Sauers, and Ava Scott; brother-in-law, Roger Danielson of Appleton, Wis.; sister-in-law, Lorie (Steve) Solvik of Lexington, Ky.; nieces, Sarah (Jeremy), Hannah (Will) and Hillary (Jobe); great-nephew, Liam; many cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws; and sister, Gail Sauers.
