Donald passed away Tuesday evening, Aug. 15, 2023, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Donald Henry was born Jan. 26, 1942, to Fredrick and Marie (Schnieder) Diekmann in Fraser Township, Martin County, Minn. Growing up he attended school in Fairmont and was a member of the 1960 graduating class.
In 1963 Donald was united in marriage to Sharon Stade. This union was blessed with three children: Michelle, Janelle and Troy. The couple later divorced, and Donald married Cindy Westby in 1984. Donald and Cindy were blessed with two children: Gordy and Myla.
Donald later spent 25 years with his special friend, Deloris Risk. Donald and Deloris enjoyed camping and spending time with friends together. At a young age Donald began working at his parent’s bar, Fred’s Place, which was the start of him learning the importance of good, honest and hard work. The work ethic that was instilled in him at a
young age was carried out throughout his daily life, also teaching the importance of hard work to his children. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, putting others first. He could be found mowing or snow blowing for friends and neighbors; and helping at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont where he was an active member. He worked for the City of Fairmont for 35 years as the manager of the liquor store, retiring in 2003.
Donald enjoyed fishing and gardening, making his own salsa and was known for having the secret family recipe to hot beefs. He liked to play pull tabs and drink a cold beer with his friends and family. Family always came first and he cherished all the memories he was able to make with them.
Left to cherish his memory include his children: Michelle (Barry) Klein, Janelle Schomberg, Troy (Tammy) Diekmann, Gordy (Erica) Diekmann and Myla (Anthony Tate) Diekmann; grandchildren: Brooke (Eric) Colby, Lucas Schomberg, Ashly (Joseph II) Maidl, Chloe (Brady) Jensen, Brittany (Chris) Burnett, Aryton Aust, Kazin Diekmann, Daeden Diekmann and Joseph Tate; great-grandchildren: Adeline, Jebidiah and Colt; sister, Ruth Emery; sister-in-law, Janet Diekmann; other extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Melinda Schomberg; brothers: Richard, Kenny, Sylvan, Eugene and Karl Diekmann; and special friend, Deloris Risk.
