Dorene D. Luhmann

FAIRMONT — A celebration of life service for Dorene D. Luhmann, 89, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont. A private family burial will be held at Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont.

Dorene passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements. Dorene Dorothy (Custard) Luhmann was born Aug. 17, 1933, in Bemidji, Minn., the daughter of Ed and Margaret (Cornell) Custard. As a young girl, Dorene moved with her family to Fairmont, Minn., where she received her education from Fairmont public school and graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1951.

On Feb. 4, 1952, Dorene was united in marriage to Harland Archie Luhmann in Fairmont, Minn. Harland was actively serving in the U.S. Army and for the next two years, Dorene waited patiently for his honorable discharge and return home to Minnesota. Dorene and Harland were blessed with four children, Laurie, Ann, Lon and Greg and celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Dorene worked for many years as a telephone operator and also an aide at Lincoln Elementary School in Fairmont. She also volunteered her time working at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Dorene was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont where she was involved in many different committees in addition to helping with Sunday School, serving on Church Council and the Worship Committee and with her love of music, she joyfully sang praises to the Lord as a member of the church choir.

Dorene had a soft spot in her heart for her four-legged friends and especially her dogs, Honey and Missy. She could often be found in the warm summer months, tending to her plants and flowers. Dorene was a friend to everyone and found joy in helping others work through life’s problems. She will be greatly missed by those that loved her and called her a friend.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Laurie (Brad) Yost of Fairmont, W.Va., Ann (Brian) Struss of Fairmont, Minn., Lon (Heidi) Luhmann of Fairmont, Minn. and Greg (Deanne) Luhmann of Fairmont, Minn.; grandchildren, Trana Householder, Jacob (Ashley) Luhmann, Alex (Melissa) Luhmann, Lindsey (Kris Olson) Luhmann, Jason Struss, Kristin Bliven, Cory (Cas) Luhmann, Harley (Ashley) Luhmann, Brent (Ashley) Yost and Ryan (Josie) Yost; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Grayson, Beckett, Kadence, Kanon, Kaden, Logyn, Karver, Loula, Elliana, Tayah, Keegan, Catherine, Ryker, Kambri, Adalynn and Raylynn; siblings, Dwayne (Karen) Custard, Peggy (Dick) Nelson and Gayla (Jim) Miller; sister-in-law, Peggy Custard; brother-in-law, Carroll Luhmann; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Dorene was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Margaret Custard; husband, Harland Luhmann; brother, David Custard; sister, Judy Saunders; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harry and Vera Luhmann; in-laws, Florence (Lyle) Cottew, LaVera (Frank) Skalicky, Kenny (Vi) Luhmann, Sharon Luhmann and Russell (Lucille) Luhmann.

Memorials may be made in Dorene’s name to the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center Building Blocks Learning Center and Child Care Project and the Martin County Humane Society of Fairmont.
