JoAnn passed away Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

JoAnn Ardelle Roll was born March 25, 1934 in Mountain Lake, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Elma (Van Horssen) Roll. Growing up, she attended country school near Windom, Minn. and Westbrook High School. Later in life, JoAnn received her secretarial degree from Jackson Vocational in Jackson, Minn. and her bachelor’s degree from Mankato State. JoAnn was united in marriage to Ervin Mitchell. This union was blessed with five children: Gail, Merle, Deanna, Clayton and Eileen. The couple later divorced. JoAnn worked for many years as a dispatcher at the Law Enforcement Center and also worked at REM in Fairmont. She was very independent and self-reliant. She was a worldwide solo traveler and twice drove her red Honda Civic hatchback to Alaska, camping in the back all the way. She visited all 50 states, Australia, the Netherlands, France, Mexico and Canada.

JoAnn loved to just drive around, it was a way for her to relax and take in the beauty of nature around her. She was an avid reader, mystery stories being her favorite. She could be found most afternoons parked by the lake at Klessig or Gomsrud Park, enjoying

the view and reading a good book. She enjoyed long visits catching up with friends, and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. JoAnn will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory include her children, Gail Pugsley of Wilmore, Ky., Deanna Mitchell of North Mankato, Minn., Clayton Mitchell of Granada, Minn. and Eileen (Steve Welch) Mitchell of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Nancy Mitchell of Fairmont, Minn.; 5 grandchildren, Jesse Mitchell (Angel Baysinger), Christopher Mitchell, Traci Mitchell, David Mitchell and Laura (Thomas) Willett; 6 great-grandchildren, Corey, Dustin, Clay, Brett, Daunte and Jasmine; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Everle and Parker; brothers, Rich (LaVonne) Roll and Stan (Delores) Roll; other extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, JoAnn was preceded in death by her son, Merle Mitchell; and brothers, Kenneth Roll and Lawrence Roll.
