David Roland Hartmann was born Dec. 16, 1948, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Roland and Adeline (Johnson) Hartmann. He attended school in Truman, Minn. and graduated from Truman High School. He would go on to further his education by attending Jackson Vo-Tech College in Jackson, Minn. On Dec. 5, 1970, David enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served his country proudly during the Vietnam War. During his time in the service, David was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. On May 23, 1971, he received his honorable discharge and returned home to Minnesota. On May 27, 1972, David was united in marriage to Carol Sundberg at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont, Minn. The couple made their home in Northrop and later Fairmont and were blessed with two daughters, Dani and Gena. The couple later divorced but David was blessed to find love again when he met his life-partner, Marsha Rettig. David worked as an operator at Fairmont Caststone and later opened his own business, J&H Concrete. He also worked as a tender-truck driver at Nutrien Ag Solutions until his retirement in March 2019. When not working, David found great joy in working in his garden and canning the fruits of his labor and he jumped at any opportunity to spend a day at the lake with a line in water waiting for the fish to bite.

Left to cherish his memory is his significant other, Marsha Rettig; daughters, Dani (Brad) Lenort and their children, Belle, Sami and Brier; Gena Steinberg and her children, Alex and Rilea; two sisters, Diane Hovdet and Connie (Butch) Eppeland; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. David was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Adeline Hartmann. The family requests memorials be given in David’s name to the Fox Lake Conservation Club or the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222.
