Lanny D. Milbrandt

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — Lanny Dale Milbrandt, age 83, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2023, in Stockbridge, Ga. Services for him were held May 13, in McDonough, Ga.

He was born Sept. 27, 1939, in Fairmont, Minn., to Louis and Lois Milbrandt. Lanny graduated from Fairmont High School in Fairmont, Minn. He received his BS and MS degrees from Mankato State University, and PhD in Education from Arizona State University.

Lanny was an accomplished craftsman and artist participating in numerous group and solo exhibitions. During his lengthy career he taught art in public schools in northern Iowa and Rochester, Minnesota; was appointed Professor and Chair of Art Department at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas; and was a Professor, Department Chair and Dean of the College of the Arts at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga. He was an active member of the National Arts Education Association and a lifelong advocate for the arts in education. Lanny was a car enthusiast and a member of several regional Corvair car clubs. His family affectionately called him the Corvair King.

Dr. Milbrandt is survived by his wife, Melody K. Milbrandt; children, Bennett (Lorine) Milbrandt, Michael Milbrandt, Aaron Swanson, Mira (Steve) Owens; sister-in-law, Sabrina Wells Kennedy; nephew, Stephen Milbrandt; nieces, Elizabeth (Aaron) Hemberger and Emma Kennedy; grandchildren, Lisa Milbrandt, Matthew Milbrandt, Romaric Milbrandt, Jacinta Milbrandt, Madison and Joshua Owens, Nate and Nicolas Swanson; great-grandson, Jace Milbrandt. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald Milbrandt; brother-in-law, Martin Kennedy. The family suggests donations in memory of Lanny D. Milbrandt to Habitat for Humanity or the National Art Education Foundation.
