Janet-Lee passed away Monday, April 10, 2023, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Janet Lee Marie (Maday) Olson was born Sept. 23, 1935, to Ladeslaus (Ed) and Norma (Schulte) Maday in Fairmont, Minn. She lived on a farm near Guckeen and attended East Chain school. In 6th grade her family moved to Fairmont and she attended St. Paul’s Catholic School and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1953.

On July 31, 1955, Janet Lee was united in marriage to Ronald Lee Olson at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. They made their home in Fairmont and were blessed with four children, Rick, Chris, Jane and John. While raising their children, Janet Lee worked part-time in the Montgomery Wards and JC Penney catalog departments. Janet Lee was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, St. Thomas church circle, Rose Lake Golf Club and a member and past president of the Mrs. Jaycees. After working 25 years at Martin County National Bank/Profinium, Janet Lee retired in November of 2000.

Janet Lee enjoyed vacationing, playing cards, gardening, golfing, dancing, hunting, and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed the sunshine and loved being on the golf course. She and Ron won many golf trophies at Rose Lake Golf Club. Jan became a pillar for her family for the past 32 years when Ron suddenly passed away in August, 1991. She was a strong and faithful Catholic, an amazing role model to her family, very loving, funny, resilient and tough as could be. Each August she looked forward to visiting her son, John, and his family in Washington. She was her children’s and grandchildren’s biggest sports fan over a span of 60 years. She loved competition and was a strong competitor with any round of golf, board game or cards. You were on edge when you played against her. Many laughs and memories were made playing hours of cards around the family table. She made every holiday special and was an amazing cook. She took much pride in baking beautiful holiday cookies that were quickly consumed by family. Over the last several years, she became the “Queen” of the Kings in the Corner card game and wouldn’t miss watching a Minnesota Timberwolves game. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Christopher (Judy) Olson of Fairmont, her daughter, Jane Gustafson (Bret Roberts) of Fairmont, her son, John (Leanne) Olson of Everson, Wash., and daughter-in-law, Diana Olson of Fairmont; grandchildren, Darek (Karla) Olson, Darcy Olson, Riley (Julia) Gustafson, Levi Gustafson, Jenna Lee Gustafson (Adam Carstensen), Kelsi Roberts, Kaitlin (Chase) Erickson, Tanner Olson (Kaylyn Whipkey), Taylor (Jordan) VanKooten, Nick Olson, Wyatt Olson, and Allye Olson; great-grandchildren, Citlali and Leilani Olson, Lydia and Charles Gustafson, and Maxwell Erickson; sister, Phyllis Pierce of Bird Island; sister-in-law, Norma Olson of Fairmont; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Olson; son, Rick Olson; her parents Ladeslaus and Norma Maday; her in-laws, Soren and Ellen Olson; brother and sister-in-laws Willard Pierce, Woodrow and Helois Olson, Frank and Evelyn Malcolm, Melvin and Margie Krahmer, Gordon and Vera Olson, Clair and Jean Olson, Sylvan and Marion Olson, Lowell Olson, Gordon and Ginny Benschoter, and Bernie and Janice DeMarce.
