Fern Pearl (Armbrust) Bulfer was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Waverly Township, Minn. Fern passed away Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, at Ingleside Memory Care in Fairmont. She was the daughter of William and Lydia (Milbrandt) Armbrust.Despite the many difficulties of growing up during the depression (constant hunger, hard work and her mother’s death at age seven), she was always incredibly positive, happy and full of love. Fern graduated from 8th grade at District 54 in Waverly Township. Her dream in life was to be a school teacher, but because of hard times she was needed at home. At age 12, she had to start cooking for her family. But her dream of being a teacher did come true because if it weren’t for her, Jim and Bill would have never made it through grade school. Fern was united in marriage to George Bulfer on Sept. 16, 1947. This union was blessed with two sons, Jim and Bill, and three daughters, Rita, Ann, and Joan. They settled on their farm

west of Fairmont where they farmed and raised their family. She was a lifelong member of St. John Vianney Church and St. Isadore Circle. George passed away in 1972 after 25 years of marriage.

Fern was kind and faithful and she treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Grandma. She had a lively personality and she had a knack for making people laugh, telling stories and writing great letters. Everyone was always welcome at her home and enjoyed her hospitality and great cooking, especially her homemade bread and desserts. As her memory slowly left her, she remained happy, her

sense of humor intact and positive attitude always with her. Even at 103, she thoroughly enjoyed playing 500, bidding high and always winning.

Left to cherish her memory include her children, Jim (Carol), Bill (Paula), Rita Warner (Jim), Ann Gemmill (Bruce), and Joan Bulfer (Dana Donatucci); seven grandchildren; one stepgrandson; 11 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; younger brothers, Albert and William (Audrey) Armbrust; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, William and Lydia Armbrust; stepmother, Josephine Armbrust, Fern was preceded in death by her husband, George Bulfer; brothers, Gordon, Harvey (Grace), Wallace (Myrtle), Lawrence, Ray (Lucille), Robert (Hazel) and Don (Helen and Mary); sisters, Wilma Aakre (Olav), Ruby Lewis (Evan) and Faye Cutler (Vernon); sister-in-law, Muriel Armbrust; and all of George’s brothers, sisters and spouses. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Memorials can be given to the St.
