Lawrence G. Whitman

EAST CHAIN — A memorial service for Lawrence “Larry” G. Whitman, age 93, of East Chain, Minn., will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Lakeview Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, East Chain, Minn. Larry passed away Friday afternoon, April 7, 2023, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Lawrence Guy Whitman was born July 2, 1929, to Harry and Augusta (Zehm) at their home in rural East Chain Township. Born less than 2 pounds, he was the youngest of 7 children. He attended East Chain Consolidated School and graduated in 1947. After graduation, he turned an old school bus into a cream truck and was employed by the East Chain Creamery until he began farming. On April 21, 1952, he was united in marriage to Maxine Schock at the

Methodist Church in East Chain. Together they farmed for 56 years in rural East Chain Township, living most of those years in the same home that Lawrence was born in. Maxine passed away on Oct. 1, 2008. Lawrence was the last living founding member of the EC

Sportsman’s Club and was a member of United Methodist Church of East Chain, where he served as a trustee for many years. He was also on the Oakwood Cemetery Board. Lawrence enjoyed trapshooting, hunting, spearfishing, birdwatching, basketball, playing buck euchre, ice cream and a good joke. He also was known to play a competitive game of croquet with the grandkids and kept the family history alive with his stories. He was especially known for his kind demeanor and love for his family.

Whitman and Bruce (Tami) Whitman; grandchildren: Nate (Gina) Rudolph, Christa (Nicholas) Smith, Guy (Mallory) Rudolph, Neil (Becky) Whitman, Laura (Zach) Koch, Cassie (Ben) Becker, Megan (JD) Goraczkowski and Lindsey (Brad) Becker; great-grandchildren: Mason, Bella and Ty Rudolph, Max and Ingrid Smith, Graham, Nolan and Jade Rudolph, Michael Johnson, Lucy and Millie Koch, Macey and Cohl Becker, Jackson and Kinsley Goraczkowski, and Lylah, Cash and Lawsen Becker; sisters-in-law, Linda Brooks Whitman and Marge

Schock; brother-in-law, Lyle Shock; other extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine (Schock) Whitman; brothers: Archie, Marlow, Donald, Jesse and Warren; sister, Florence Rowley; parents-in-law, Ted and Cora (Garrison) Schock; other extended family and friends.
