FAIRMONT -- A celebration of life service for Betty Jean Schumann, 91, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. today, March 27, 2023, at the Christian Church in Fairmont, Minn. A visitation will be prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. today, March 27, at the Christian Church in Fairmont. Burial will be held at a later date in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, S.D.
Betty died Thursday morning, March 23, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn., surrounded by her family. Messages of sympathy may be sent to the family online at www.kramerfuneralhome.com
Betty Jean Peregrine was born Jan. 13, 1932, to Glenn and May (Boyner) Peregrine in Newell, S.D. She graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1950. She then made the trip to California where she met the love of her life Charles Schumann. They were united in marriage on Jan. 23, 1952, in Sun Valley, Calif. Eventually they returned to the midwest settling in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Together they owned and operated Buffalo Lanes and Casey's General Store. Betty enjoyed her time educating local youth on the finer points of bowling. She also spent many hours making sure the books were as clean as her house. Following the death of her husband, Betty moved back to Sturgis, S.D. In 2003, she moved to Fairmont, Minn. to be closer to her family. She attended the Christian Church in Fairmont and previously attended the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center, Iowa. She was an active member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and Bison Unlimited. Betty greatly enjoyed decorating for all the holidays. She loved sending cards and keeping in touch with family and friends. Betty always looked forward to her autumn retreat to West Oaks in Okoboji. Betty and her family are forever grateful for Karen Plathe who allowed Betty to maintain her independence. She is survived by her daughter, Robin (Bruce) Johnson of Mt. Prospect, Ill.; grandchildren, Dana (Mike) Whittlinger, Heidi (Jeremy) Howard, Adam (Sonja) Williamson, Tucker (Tracie) Schumann, Avery Johnson and Max Johnson; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Trevor, Kyra and Wyatt, Madison and Isaac, Cooper and Cable; great-great-granddaughter, Paxton; brother, Bob (Donna) Peregrine of Rapid City, S.D.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Schumann; son, Dale A. Schumann; and other relatives.
