Robert V. Tonneson

FAIRMONT -- Private family services for Robert "Tiny" V. Tonneson, age 89, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, with military honors provided by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post

1222. Inurnment will be at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont.

Robert passed away Monday morning, Feb. 20, 2023, at his home in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert Verlon Tonneson was born Nov. 15, 1933, in Fairmont, Minn., son of Oscar and Lucille (Loch). Robert attended Fairmont public schools and later enlisted in the U.S. Army on Dec. 12, 1950. He was based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a paratrooper in the

airborne where he served with demolition until earning his honorable discharge on Dec. 12, 1953.

On Feb. 26, 1955, Tiny was united in marriage to Jeanette Howerter at Granada United Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Fairmont where they were blessed with five children: Steve, Terry, Troy, Tammy and Shane. Robert and Jeanette shared 56 years together before Jeanette passed away on March 6, 2011. After returning from the military, Robert worked at 3M in Fairmont. In 1968, he and Jeanette purchased the Lair Marina and owned and operated the business until 1976. After selling the marina, Robert worked as the manager of the Fairmall until his retirement in 1996. During his free time, Robert enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was fishing, huntingor the several family camping trips as well as traveling to Texas with Jeanette. He was also known to be a real handyman who could fix anything mechanical or electrical.

Left to cherish his memory include his five children, Steve Tonneson and his wife, Evelyn and their children, Brandon (Rachel) Tonneson, Christine Laue, Anna Stine (Travis

Berhow) and Jason (Stephanie) Stine; Terry Tonneson and Tammy Anderson and his children, Auston (Brittany) Tonneson, Andy (Heidi) Tonneson and Crystal (Randall) Lobel; Troy Tonneson and his wife, Teresa and their children, Dustin (Erica) Tonneson, Doyle

(Josie) Tonneson and Dayle (Sierra) Tonneson; Tammy Speckman and her son, Dylan Gruhn; and Shane Tonneson; great-grandchildren, Leanne Laue, Jayden Laue, Samantha Stine, Bryant

Berhow, Keagan Berhow, Charlotte Berhow, Hudson and Harper Stine, Tyson and Taylor Tonneson, Oliver, Gus, Ruth, and Oscar Tonneson, Benjamin Lobel, Faith, Jadalyn and Paige Tonneson, Lilly, Drew, and Brooklyn, Kylie Tonneson, Nevaeh, Paxton and Knox Tonneson; great-great-granddaughter, Meredith Frerichs; sister-in-law, Jean Beenken and her husband, Al; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Along with his parents, Oscar and Lucille Tonneson, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Tonneson; stepmother, Brenda Tonneson; brother, Howard Tonneson and his wife, Joyce; sister, Fern Dahlen and her husband, Morris; sister-in-law, Deloris Bell; brother-in-law, Charles Howerter; parents-in-law, Russell and Agnes Howerter; and nephews, Roger Tonneson and Duane Dahlen.
