LAKEVILLE -- A funeral service for Marie Lehmann Humphrey, age 89, of Santa Monica, Calif., will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2023, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minn. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in Lake Belt Cemetery, rural Ceylon.
Marie passed away Thursday evening, March 2, 2023, at The Fountains of Hosanna Assisted Living in Lakeville, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.Marie Augusta (Lehmann) Humphrey was born Nov. 3, 1933, to George and Elsie (Krueger) Lehmann on the family farm west of Ceylon. She was baptized and later confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minn. She attended Ceylon Public School, graduating in 1951. She furthered her education at the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, Minn., and after completing this course, and with her father's approval, she moved to Nevada with a girlfriend and obtained a job with the Department of Defense working in what is now known as Area 51. After a year she moved to San Francisco and was working in the administrative offices of the American President Lines when she met her future husband, Bill, who was an acquaintance of her boss.
Marie and Bill were married on Sept. 12, 1954, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ceylon, and made their home in San Francisco for 10 years then moved to Santa Monica, Calif. There she became a real estate agent and eventually a real estate broker, and in 1975 she started Humphrey Real Estate. She enjoyed the real estate business and was involved in a number of organizations in Santa Monica including president of the Santa Monica Board of Realtors, County of LA. She closed her real estate business in 2022 when she moved back to MN. Marie had a passion for raising, training, and showing Boston Terriers, winning many dog show competitions. She also enjoyed playing the piano and studying music. Marie and Bill shared 52 years of marriage together before his passing in 2007, after which she had the opportunity to travel at times, with her brothers and sisters, seeing many places around the world. She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Santa Monica, Calif., where she served as president of the Altar Guild for 35 years.
She is survived by her sisters, Iris Schlichting, Winnifred (Paul) Olson; brothers, Melvin (Susan) Lehmann, and Roger (Elizabeth) Lehmann; many cherished nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Humphrey; parents, George and Elsie Lehmann; brothers and sister-in-law; George and Helen Lehmann, Gerald and Ruth Lehmann, Donald and Bernice Lehmann; brother-in-law, John Schlichting; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Ewald Detert; along with eight nephews and two nieces.
