FAIRMONT -- A memorial service for David E. Johnson, age 80, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont, with full military honors at the church by the Jackson American Legion Post 130. A private family burial will be held at a later date in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery near Bergen, Minn. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont.
David passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, at Thorne Crest Senior Living in Albert Lea, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
David Eugene Johnson was born Dec. 24, 1942, in Jackson, Minn., son of Roy and Pauline (Whisney) Johnson. David attended District #61 School in Kimball Township and later attended Jackson High School. After graduating from Jackson High School in 1960, David furthered his education at Worthington Junior College. On April 9, 1964, David enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, with the 6th Battalion, 92nd Artillery, 2nd Division. David achieved the rank of SP4 (T) before earning his honorable discharge on April 8, 1966. On Feb. 25, 1967, David was united in marriage to Verna Hilpipre at East Chain Methodist Church. This union was blessed with four children, Neil, Lorie, Sheila, and Amy. The family resided in Jackson, Minn., until David later moved to Fairmont in 2006. David worked for the Jackson Police Department from 1967 until Dec. 31, 1970. In the fall of 1970, he was elected to the Office of Clerk of Court for Jackson County and served as court administrator until his retirement in March 2000. After retiring, David enjoyed spending his time doing handyman work and helping other people as well as volunteering as a school crossing guard in Fairmont. David was a past member of the Jackson Lions Club, Jackson United Fund, Jackson Fire and Ambulance Department, as well as Jackson American Legion Post 130. Left to cherish his memory include his children, Neil (Nancy) Johnson of Fairmont, Lorie (Collin) Cunning of Fairmont, Sheila (Phil) Bettin of Trimont, and Amy (Jon) Timko of Lakefield; special friend, Bette Stevens of Fairmont; grandchildren, Caleb Johnson and fiancé, Brianna Olson, Hannah Johnson, and Carson Johnson of Fairmont, Skyler Cunning and fiancé, Thea Nutt of Fairmont, Colton Cunning of Rapid City, S.D., Hailey (Austin) Lucht of Jackson, Ryan Timko of Lakefield, Tanner Timko of Lakefield, Emily Bettin of Trimont, Lindsey Bettin of Morris, Kiley Bettin of Trimont, and Kelley Bettin of Trimont; three great-grandchildren, Sidney Cunning, Kasen Lucht, and Emmett Lucht; brothers, Roger (Kay) Johnson of Jackson, and Sheldon (Janell) Johnson of Jackson; sister, Millicent (Tom) Estes of Austin, Texas; brother-in-law, Dean Hilpipre; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. David was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Pauline Johnson; his wife, Verna (Hilpipre) Johnson; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and other extended family.
