WELCOME -- A celebration of life service for Elmer Juhl Jr., 79, of Welcome, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2022, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Welcome. Burial, with military honors by Welcome American Legion Post 553, will be at Welcome City Cemetery.
Elmer was called to his eternal rest Monday morning, Dec. 12, 2022, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., on his 79 birthday. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Welcome, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Elmer Victor Juhl Jr. was born Dec. 12, 1943, in Welcome, Minn., to Elmer and Elizabeth (Updike) Juhl. He grew up in Welcome, graduating with the class of 1961. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Special Forces in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1965. He was united in marriage to Shirley Ficken on March 12, 1966, at the Methodist Church in Sherburn, Minn. They moved to Rockford, Ill., where he worked for Chrysler and welcomed their daughter, Tammy. They moved back to Welcome in 1970 and Elmer was employed for Amdevco Plastics. He enjoyed working with wood and making things, carpentry work and gardening including his apple trees. Elmer was a great fixer upper. He loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time hunting and fishing. Annual deer hunts with his nephews and family fishing trips. His greatest passion was their lake lot on Fox Lake where he greatly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elmer was a life member of Welcome American Legion Post 553 and a member of the V.F.W. He will be forever missed by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; his daughter, Tammy (Bob) Rettke; grandchildren, Alan, Nathan and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Addison; brothers, Bruce (Judy) Juhl, Harold (Valerie) Juhl, Martin Juhl; sisters, Delores (Wayne) Wilke, Beverly (Sylvan) Peterson, Barbara (Russell) Plumhoff; sister-in-law, Kathleen Ficken; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Elizabeth Juhl; father and mother-in-law, Harold and Myrtle Ficken; sister-in-law, Debra Juhl; brother-in-law, David Ficken; nieces, Anne Peterson and Chantal Plumhoff; nephews, Troy Plumhoff and Matt Plumhoff; and other relatives. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the First Responders EMT of the Welcome Fire Department.
