Roland P. Wagner

FAIRMONT — Roland “Rollie” P. Wagner, age 81, of Fairmont, Minn., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022, at his winter home in Mesa, Ariz. A funeral service for Roland will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Military honors will be provided by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Roland Paul Wagner was born Nov. 24, 1940, in Fairmont, Minn., son of Henry and Esther (Goebel) Wagner. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wilbert. Roland attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Fairmont, and was confirmed in the faith at St. Paul

Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Rollie graduated from Fairmont High School in 1958. He then helped build a popular restaurant in town, the Channel Inn. In 1959, Rollie enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following basic training in San Diego, Calif., he was stationed in

Okinawa, the Philippines and Hong Kong. Rollie also took part in the Naval Quarantine during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1963. Rollie next began as a Centel Telephone installer in Fairmont and worked his way to the Fairmont area supervisor until his 1993 retirement. On July 25, 1969, Rollie was united in marriage to Marlys (Johannesen) Krueger at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont Minn., where they were long standing members. Rollie often ushered and served as head usher for many years. They enjoyed golfing and traveling in retirement. Rollie was quick to tell others about their granddaughters, Katie and Emily, and their accomplishments in the healthcare field. Accompanied by his cat, Divot, he enjoyed relaxing with friends and relatives on his backyard deck overlooking the golf course. Rollie called this “His little slice of Heaven on Earth.”

Rollie is survived by stepson, Thomas (Deborah) Krueger; granddaughters, Katie and Emily Krueger; sister, Dorothy Sutton (Chip); sisters-in-law, Avis Wagner, Carolyn Wagner, Janice Wagner, and Marilyn Johannesen; brother-in-law, Ronald (Leila) Johannesen; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Along with his wife of 39 years, Marlys Wagner, Rollie was preceded in death by parents, Henry and Esther Wagner; brothers, Harold, Robert, Richard, and Daniel; his sisters, Ruth, in infancy, and Adeline Galchutt; and

brothers-in-law, Rev. Gary Galchutt and Morris Johannesen. The family would like to especially thank Roland’s friend, Linda Welchlin. Memorials preferred to St. Paul Lutheran School of Fairmont or Martin County Veteran’s Memorial or the donor’s choice.
