FAIRMONT -- A celebration of life service for Phyllis M. Smith, 85, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, at Kramer Family Funeral Home Chapel in Trimont, Minn. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Fairmont, Minn.
Phyllis was called to her eternal rest Friday evening, Oct. 28, 2022, at Seasons Healthcare in Trimont, Minn. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home in Trimont. Messages of sympathy may be sent to the family online at www.kramerfuneralhome.com
Phyllis Marlene Baarts was born July 14, 1937, to Lorin and Anna (Wright) Baarts in Truman, Minn. She received her education attending school in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1955. On May 14, 1960, she was united in marriage to Benjamin Smith Jr. in Fairmont, Minn. After their marriage they made their home in Fairmont where Phyllis was employed at Fairmont Public Utilities until her retirement in 2002. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved to spend time with her two granddaughters. Phyllis loved to go to her granddaughters sporting and school events. Enjoyed spending time and playing cards with her family. Phyllis and Ben enjoyed several winter trips to Texas to visit her sister, Marilyn. She was a member of the Christian Church in Fairmont. She is survived by her son, David and wife, Tammy Smith; grandchildren, Whitney and Natalie Smith of Sherburn, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Dolores Baarts of Fairmont, Minn., Virginia Kischer of Quimby, Iowa, Evy (Ward) Knockemus of Alabama, Mary Smith of Jackson, Minn., and Lila Smith of Jackson, Minn.; brother-in-law, Bill (Jean) Smith of New Hope, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, Lorin and Anna Baarts; husband, Ben Smith; brothers, Jim Baarts, Merlyn Baarts and wife, Marsha; sisters, Janice Bicknase and husband, Ray, Edythe Bonstead and husband, Leonard, Marilyn Borchardt and her husband, Gene and Eunice Koestler; brothers-in-law, Mike Smith and Bob Smith; as well as many other extended family. The Smith family would like to thank the staff at Season's Healthcare in Trimont for the excellent and loving care they provided for both Ben and Phyllis.
